I’m always asked about beauty trends and fads, how to keep skin and hair healthy and what are my favorite beauty tips. Here, a few tried and true anti-aging beauty tips that I swear by …

1.Wash your face! Seems simple enough but you’d be surprised at how many people sleep in their makeup. Every beauty editor, dermatologist and aesthetician tells you to wash the makeup off your face at the end of the day. Leaving makeup on for too long can clog your pores resulting in breakouts. I’ve read that sleeping in makeup can also attract free radicals to your skin which may break down collagen and cause fine lines and wrinkles. Ugh. Wash your face, and use a cleanser that’s formulated for your skin type. A cleanser I love is RoC Daily Resurfacing Discs. One side exfoliates; the other smoothes. Get them here:

2. Don’t hate me for this advice, but, leave the makeup wipes in the drugstore or supermarket. Sure, they’re easy to use, but they really don’t do a very good job of cleansing your skin. They can also clog your toilet if you flush them and are bad for the environment if you don’t.

3. Use sunscreen or a moisturizer with SPF, even on cloudy days. It’s been said for years by everyone from dermatologists to aestheticians to the salespeople at cosmetics’ counters, yet many people still skip sunscreen, Protect your skin from the sun to reduce the chances of skin cancer and premature aging. Today’s sunscreens are formulated to be lighter and greaseless. Still hate them?  Then, look for a moisturizer or foundation with broad spectrum SPF. And, don’t forget to apply to your neck and the backs of your hands which show sun damage easily. I use RoC® MULTI CORREXION® 5 In 1 Daily Moisturizer With Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 every day. 4. Moisturize your hair. As we age, our hair can become drier and more brittle resulting in frizzies and breakage. Try to incorporate a hair mask or DIY hair conditioner into your weekly routine. I use organic coconut oil as a hair conditioner, leave it on for half an hour and then wash it out. It leaves my hair soft, shiny and more easily managed than before I started this weekly routine.

5.Use lipliner. I know, I know. This isn’t 1994 when the look of a nude lip outlined in dark liner was de rigeuer. But, lipliner, a nude one or one that matches your lip color, will flatter your lips by defining them. Also, as we age, we may get fine lines around our lips. Lipliner will help prevent lip color from migrating into those lines.

6. Define your brows. Strong eyebrows are a current beauty trend, but may be too heavy for some women. However, as we age, we tend to lose the outer one third of our brows. Using a brow pencil, gel or powder to fill in and define eyebrows will frame your face and draw attention to your eyes and cheekbones. I like NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder. It’s available in six shades.

7. Whiten your teeth. As we age, our teeth often become discolored and stained. Visit your dentist for bi-annual cleanings and use a tooth whitening paste to help remove stains. If you’d like to whiten your teeth even more, talk to your dentist to see if you’re a candidate for professional tooth whitening.

8. Keep lipstick off your teeth with this little trick: after applying your lipcolor, stick your finger in your mouth and pucker your lips around it for a second. When you remove your finger, all the lipstick that might have otherwise migrated to your teeth will be on your finger. It’s an old trick, but one that works.

9. Think twice before applying eye liner to your waterline. They say that white liner applied to the waterline, that little space on your eyelid inside your lower lash, will brighten the whites of your eyes. Oof, it never worked for me, always disappeared within a matter of minutes and irritated my eyes. I also found that using a dark color on my waterline closed up my eyes and made them look small. Here’s a better way to make your eyes look brighter: dot a bit of light or shiny eyeshadow on the inside corner of your eyes. It will reduce or eliminate the shadow that’s there and make eyes look brighter. Make them look bigger by smudging a little eye shadow halfway under the lower eyelid. Follow with mascara on your lower lashes. Popping!

10.Change up your look periodically and try a new hairstyle, eyeshadow or lipstick. In ou busy lives, it’s quick and easy to do the same look day in and day out. I swear I can apply my makeup in five minutes and do my hair in ten by sticking to my standard look. But, sometimes, it’s fun to switch it up and try a new makeup palette, hairstyle or hair color. I might not stick to it, but it’s nice for a change. It’s also fun, for me at least, to shop for new cosmetics and to browse magazines and Instagram for new ways to apply them. One brand to try: Profusion Cosmetics. They offer a broad range of colors and cosmetics, have staying power and are easy to apply.
