Required disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of The DIRTY, LAZY, KETO COOKBOOK in exchange for my honest review, which follows. (And, fyi, I’ve recommended the cookbook to my family members and friends who follow the Keto Diet.)

The DIRTY, LAZY, KETO COOKBOOK by Stephanie Laska, MEd, and William Laska is the followup or companion book to the writers’ bestsellers, DIRTY, LAZY, KETO: Get Started Losing Weight While Breaking the Rules and DIRTY, LAZY, KETO Fast Food Guide:10 Carbs or Less.

I’ve been curious about the keto diet for some time now, but the rigors of doing it properly and sticking with it, turned me off. (Keto comes from ketogenic, a state in which the liver produces ketones, a fuel source, from fat. Weight loss occurs because the body calls upon its fat stores for energy rather than from glucose.) There’s much more to the science behind the success of the keto diet that’s too lengthy to go into here, but a Google search will bring up loads of information, pro and con.

To state it simply, the keto diet is an extremely low-carb/higher-fat diet that requires the dieter to get 70 to 75% of their calories from fat, 20% from protein and 5% from carbohydrates. There are food restrictions, including alcohol, pasta, potatoes, breads, and fruit, although a few berries are allowed.

Enter The DIRTY, LAZY, KETO COOKBOOK. Author Stephanie Laska having reached 300 pounds, was determined to lose weight for the sake not only of her health, but of her family’s safety. She tells a horrifying story of a roller coaster ride with her young son that opened her eyes to the dangers of her excess weight. Stephanie looked into the keto diet but, like me, found it too strict, laden with rules, and just not varied enough to be sustainable. That’s how she came up with DIRTY, LAZY, KETO. She bucked some of the rules, came up with workarounds of her own, and lost 140 pounds. That was six years ago. And, she kept it off!

All of the recipes in The DIRTY, LAZY, KETO COOKBOOK – and count them, there are 100! – are affordable, made with ingredients readily found in your local grocery store. All contain fewer than 10 grams of net carbs, enabling you to more easily comply with keto diet rules; and all are family-friendly and simple to prepare. The book, which in my opinion is more than a recipe book in that it includes the story of Stephanie’s weight loss journey as well as relatable, funny and personal intros to each recipe, also reads as a motivational book. The photos are enticing and the recipes are easy to follow, even for someone, like me, who hates to cook. (Did I just say that out loud?) And, if this is important to you, users of the book love it! The reviews on Amazon are pouring in and many label The DIRTY, LAZY, KETO COOKBOOK as their favorite cookbook.

For all its popularity and success, the keto diet is a major commitment and can be difficult to sustain. But, do it a little dirty. Do it a little lazy. Do it Stephanie’s way and you just may reach your weight loss goals more easily than anticipated.

Gotta say this: Of course, before starting any weight loss program, consult with your physician to make sure it’s a good idea for you.
