New York Fashion Week has just begun and already certain trends that you’ll find in stores next year – and that you may want to put on your back –  have begun to emerge. Read on for some highlights thus far …

The sheer trend continued at Tadashi Shoji who tempered it with strategically placed floral appliques and layers of tulle and lace. Shoji drew inspiration from Japan for this presentation and the flowers that bloom in Japan’s spring were evident on many pieces in the collection.

The Asian influence can also be seen in Josie Natori’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection with the graphic use of black brushstrokes on white garments and kimono-inspired silhouettes with waist-cinching obis. While the collection was mostly black and white, Natori featured pops of pink, orange and yellow to remind us of the season.

Ruffles were a big factor at Jason Wu who showed dresses and skirts with ruffles everywhere. One outstanding evening look featured a sheer top, ruffled skirt and deconstructed jacket. Prominent colors were burnt orange, pine green, black and white which, aside from the latter two that have been featured prominently in recent Spring/Summer seasons, are a departure from the pastels we often see.

The military influence was evident in Marissa Webb’s Spring/Summer collection that also featured sweet – too sweet for my taste – lace baby doll dresses. Some of the pieces were a mashup of sheer dresses topped with military jackets. Three gorgeous goldenrod pieces were a theme unto themselves and, in my opinion, were the highlights of the collection.
