Where I live, the piles of snow from this brutal winter are finally melting. The sun is shining and the temperatures are starting to rise above freezing as this seemingly endless winter takes its last frigid gasps and makes way for spring. Before today, I haven’t wanted to think about spring fashion trends and spring shopping as I couldn’t bear the thought of removing my warm sweaters and pants in the freezing cold leonine days of early March that gave no sign of turning lamb-like. No, I was happily bundled up in wool and cashmere. But today the sun is shining, the birds are singing and the budding trees indicate that spring is, indeed, on its way. Time to get my shop on for the inevitable warm and sunny days ahead.

When I think of spring fashion, I think of pastels, floral prints, cropped shirts and pants and relaxed silhouettes in lightweight, breezy fabrics. But 2013 ushered in a change in spring fashion trends that brought sophistication, graphic appeal and a slightly urban edge that continues for 2014 as well – and it is most evident in the black and white fashions that ruled the runways. From color blocking to graphic prints to allover color, black and white, together or alone, look fresh and modern this spring.

Black and white was only one of several emerging spring fashion trends (keep it here for more of them in the coming days) but it is by far my favorite. I adore the sophistication of black at any time of the year and the crisp appeal of it when combined with white, well, I’m in.

I’ve combed black and white fashions from some of my favorite stores and present them here to use as inspiration for when you hit the stores – or you can shop directly from this post by clicking the links.

Happy Spring Shopping!
