Jillian Michaels Yoga Inferno

JILLIAN MICHAELS’ YOGA INFERNO DVD

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like Jillian Michaels. In fact, often their affection borders on the obsessive. Jillian Michaels, for the two of you out there who don’t know of her, is a personal trainer, TV personality and entrepreneur. She’s perhaps best known  for her appearances on TV’s The Biggest Loser. She is also a one-woman pro-shop with a line of books that include yoga and exercise books and DVDs. Her newest entry into the fitness market is Jillian Michaels Yoga Inferno, a DVD that presents two 30-minute workouts “for a toned, hot, healthy body.”

Disclaimer: I was sent the DVD gratis, to review for readers of EverBeautiful.com, in advance of its release. My chronically bad back prevented me from trying the workout until this morning. And, bonus – it’s now readily available for sale, so if you like what you read, add Jillian Michaels Yoga Inferno DVD to your exercise library.

Ok, more disclaiming. I have never seen an episode of The Biggest Loser so was unaware of Jillian’s style of instruction.

Jillian Michaels is a taskmaster. She’s a no-nonsense, take-no-prisoners type of trainer who keeps up a steady litany of conversation, some of it cajoling, some of it inspiring and some of it educational, as she explains how to perform the moves. I like a trainer who keeps up a steady convo, especially on a DVD so that I don’t have to keep my eye on the screen and can concentrate instead on the moves.

If you don’t know Chaturanga from Downward Dog or love the tranquil, mind-body-soul aspect of yoga, Jillian Michaels Yoga Inferno may not be for you. It’s kind of like yoga on speed. However, if you think you’d like the more frenetic pace of yoga cum cardio cum hand weights, you’ll love this video. (Hand weights are incorporated into the second program whereas the first one relies on your own body weight.) I recommend, for beginners especially, that you watch the DVD through to the end before beginning your workout. While Jillian keeps up a steady conversation, she doesn’t always explain the proper way to do the moves. Watching will help you execute the moves properly  – and don’t be concerned if you can’t keep up with the entire workout. Flexibility and strength are achieved through repetition, so keep going. (Of course, always check with your doctor before beginning this or any other exercise program.)

My favorite move: Alternating rows from a plank position from the second workout. Love it!
