Beauty, like fashion, has its trends and one I’ve been noticing for a while – and have been wanting to try – is the almond-shaped nail. Lady Gaga and Rihanna sport the extreme version in which the elongated nail comes to a dagger-like point. It’s called the “stiletto” and it’s too edgy for me. Plus, it requires more upkeep than I want to devote to maintaining it. But I was getting bored with my short, rounded off squares and felt they were making my hands look squat and old. Ugh, can’t have that so, after consulting with Helen, my manicurist, we came up with a modified almond. Ok, I say “almond”; Helen says “oval.” Whatever you call it, I love it. The new shape – which, honestly, is the old shape before the new shape was square – elongates my fingers and makes my nails look longer than they are. I kinda love it. It’s flattering and, because it’s different, makes me feel a little bit edgy and badass.
It’s a little thing, the shape of my nails. But even something that seemingly insignificant, has gone a long way to making me feel on trend. And I like that.
