Christina Makowsky Trunk Show, Plaza Hotel, February 2012

Luxury womenswear designer, Christina Makowsky, held a trunk show for her resort wear and Spring/Summer 2012 collection at New York City’s Plaza Hotel during Fashion Week and I had the pleasure of meeting her and previewing the line.

A little background: Christina Makowsky’s designs have adorned celebrities including Stacy Keibler, Cheryl Burke and Paula Abdul. Fans of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills will recognize her name and designs from her association with Lisa Vanderpump, arguably the entire franchise’s favorite housewife (and certainly mine. I was delighted to meet Ken, Lisa and Jiggy Vanderpump at their restaurant, Villa Blanca, in Beverly Hills before the television show even aired. Fans of the show agree that Lisa is a style icon with impeccable taste.)

Christina Makowsky has been in the fashion biz for thirty years – she looks twenty-five, by the way – and is the founder of Georgina Boutique, a bastion of style in the ever-fashionable Five Towns on Long Island and, coincidentally, the place where I grew up and where fashionable and demanding women shopped for the best designer names. Christina closed the boutique a few years ago and began her eponymous design company three years ago.

The glamorous Plaza Hotel was the perfect setting for Christina’s trunk show which featured her beautifully and delicately-detailed designs. Hand-frayed edging, exquisite jeweled trim and tailoring that is intended to flatter the body are some of the hallmarks of Christina’s versatile designs that can take the wearer from a chic seaside luncheon to a black tie event. Her “Slashed, Frayed Scoop Neck” jersey tank, in black or cream, features detailed seaming and is cut to emphasize the waistline – or carve one out. It’s a wardrobe staple that works equally well paired with jeans or, say, a bodycon skirt for a more formal occasion. A classic blazer, which is both traditional and then again, not,  is another wardrobe must-have that does double or even triple duty – and looks fabulous on the body. And therein lies one of the secrets of Makowsky’s appeal. Her clothing is made to fit and flatter. The tailoring is impeccable; the embellishments are tasteful, playful and eye-catching all at once.

Christina takes the guesswork out of dressing. Throw on any of her uber chic dresses and all you need to finish the look is a pair of shoes. And talk about versatility, Christina offers a line of jeweled belts that turn day dressing into evening wear.

Christina knows how women want to look. Her designs are not only beautiful and easy to wear, they are cut to flatter a woman’s figure. Brava!
