Soleil Organique for a Cure

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At Soleil Organique, too many of our friends and family have undergone or are undergoing some sort of battle with breast and other types of cancer. We are trying to do our best to take part in the solution and will donate 20% of all proceeds for the month of October to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Please help us make a difference.

SOME SCARY BREAST CANCER STATISTICS
• Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer.
• It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.
• About 1 in 8 women in the United States (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
• Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women. More than 1 in 4 cancers in women (about 28%) are breast cancer.
• The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35. Breast cancer death rates have been going down, probably as a result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment.
• There are more than 2 1/2 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
LOWERING YOUR RISK
Change the risk factors under your control:
• Limiting alcohol use, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight can lower the risk of getting breast cancer.
• Breast-feeding for at least several months may reduce breast cancer risk.
• Not using hormone therapy after menopause can also reduce cancer risk.
• It’s not clear at this time whether chemicals that have estrogen-like properties increase breast cancer risk – chemicals like those found in some plastics, cosmetics and personal care products, pesticides (such as DDE), and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), parabens (used as preservatives in antiperspirants and other products. Some small studies have shown trace levels of these chemicals in a small sample of breast cancer tumors. That’s enough to make us concerned, so why take the risk? Opt for safer options in the products you use daily.
EARLY DETECTION IS KEY
The American Cancer Society recommends the following guidelines for early detection:
• Mammogram: Women 40+ should have a screening mammogram every year.
• Clinical breast exam (CBE): Women in their 20s and 30s should have a CBE at least every 3 years. Women aged 40+, women should have a CBE every year.
• Breast self-exam (BSE): BSE is an option for women starting in their 20s. Women should report any changes in how their breasts look or feel to a health expert right away.
See The American Cancer Society website for more information http://www.cancer.org.
Sincerely yours,

Valerie
