I cannot explain why this is, but every Fall, I’m in the mood to change my hair. My early Fall hair appointments find me asking my stylist for a sleeker cut and a style that, while still easy to maintain, reflects a more professional attitude. It makes little sense. I work year round – but there’s something about the Fall that makes me want to trade my casual, warm-weather waves for sleeker locks. With that comes changing my hair-care routine too. In the Fall I’m looking for products that up the volume, boost the shine and tame the frizz. I’m blow-drying more, so conditioning my hair becomes a not-to-be-missed step after every shampoo. At any time of year, I love a deep conditioner, but it’s essential to my cold weather hair care routine when blow-drying and indoor heating rob my hair of moisture and leave it dull and flyaway.

Here, some healthy hair tips, courtesy of  hair guru Josue Perez, the mane man for some of Hollywood’s hottest stars  including Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz, to name just three …

“Let’s go back to fall basics and trade in the natural, careless waves of summer for a polished, put together look perfectly fit for this season. Switching up our products and tools every few months is not only healthy for our hair, it can be just the ticket to revamp a new fall style full circle.

·         For Starters: Don’t shampoo your hair every day. The chemicals within shampoo can dry out your scalp; it’s best to shampoo three to four times a week. On the off days, wash hair with water and condition only the ends.

·         Deep Condition: Since we all love our hair tools and styling, it’s really important to deep condition once a week. This will keep your ends from splitting and fraying, keeping that dried out look away.

·         Beat the Heat: Always prep your hair before styling. Use a spray that protects hair against damage and use tools that are designed specifically to minimize heat damage with protective coating and an ionic generator.

·         Your Diet: Healthy, strong hair surprisingly has a lot to do with our diet. To get the healthiest hair it’s best to eat foods with high protein and omega fatty acids, such as salmon, nuts, eggs and cheese.”

Here are some of my Favorite Healthy Hair Tips

Look no further than your supermarket shelves for a deep conditioner that works wonders. Apply coconut oil liberally to hair and let it sit for at least 20 minutes before shampooing. You may need to rinse and repeat to get all of the oil out of your hair, but it’s worth the effort. Coconut oil will help moisturize your hair to make it shinier and healthier. (This is a modern take on using olive oil as a deep conditioner. Plus, added bonus – coconut oil smells like summer and washes out a little easier than olive oil too.)

When blow-drying hair, use your blower’s warm, rather than hot, setting to diminish its damaging effects – and hold it about six to eight inches from your hair. Also, to minimize frizz, point the airflow down the hair shaft.

Avoid brushing your hair when it’s wet to minimize breakage. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb to tame tangles.

A cold-water rinse, after your shampoo, helps to minimize frizz by sealing the hair cuticle.

It’s not necessary or good for your hair to shampoo its entire length. That will only dry it out. Instead, after getting your hair thoroughly wet, apply a small amount of shampoo to the palm of your hand and massage it through your entire scalp, paying particular attention to your hairline, especially if your hair is oily. Then work the shampoo through to the ends. Rinse with cooler water.

Itchy or oily scalp after shampooing? Skip conditioning the scalp. Instead, apply conditioner to the ends of your hair and work it midway up the length of the hair. Comb it through and allow it to sit for at least one minute before rinsing.

Unless your hair is very oily, don’t wash it every day. For limp locks that rely on a daily shampoo to give them volume, simply wet the hair on non-shampoo days and use a light conditioner on the ends. A volumizing dry shampoo also works great between shampoos.
