It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and, as we are all too painfully aware, breast cancer affects each and every one of us all year long. Each of has a friend or loved one who has experienced this devastating disease – or perhaps one of  you is fighting the battle against breast cancer yourself. We know from our own, or a loved one’s experience, that fighting breast cancer is a daily struggle, an ongoing battle that, regardless of the month or the day, continues to be waged.

While we all acknowledge that breast cancer knows no season, this month gives us the opportunity to support the cause by making us aware of it. Whether we choose to donate to our favorite charity or purchase a product from a company that will donate a portion of the proceeds to theirs, we want to help.

It’s recently come to my attention that Breast Cancer Awareness Month has come under criticism from several fronts. Some dislike the commercialism of breast cancer; others resent that only one month has been set aside to acknowledge the disease or that other diseases don’t have a month devoted to raising funds to research and eradicate them. Others say that the color pink, used to symbolize breast cancer, infantilizes women. And then there are those who feel that breast cancer awareness month has been “pink- washed.” This is the valid disagreement of the practice of selling products that contain known carcinogens to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness programs. I leave it to you to grapple with your own feelings about these issues.

IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, HERE’S HOW …

In the meantime, below are several companies that will make donations to their favorite breast cancer charities. Look them over, make a purchase or two and help fight this disease so that it will be eradicated in our lifetime.

To date, Ouidad has raised over $442,511 for BCRF.  The company also underwrites all of the administration costs of the program so that, when $10.00 is donated, BCRF receives the full $10.00. For each donation, Ouidad offers a special pink bracelet inscribed to show her gratitude. With her own difficult hair loss experience, Ouidad is able to comfort troubled clients in an entirely personal way, and suggests these helpful tips on how to look good and feel good during this difficult time.

• Skin will have a yellow tint from chemotherapy – use a bronzer with a pink tint to balance skin color

• Hair tends to lose pigmentation, often growing in gray and curly; wait at least six months post chemotherapy for color to prevent damage of new growth

• Visually prepare for hair loss by cutting hair shorter to minimize the drastic effect of losing hair

• With new hair growth, do deep treatments every two weeks to feed and strengthen hair; frequent deep conditioning is necessary to replenish nutrients, allowing each strand to regain its internal weight and body

2 Comments on Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2013

  1. That’s great Jill! The watch is fabulous! Love it! I love the whole site and how they donate to all of those charities. I am so impressed with the number of companies that have stepped up for the cause. I’m working on Part 2 with different companies and ways for readers to get involved, so look for that in a few days. Also, I’m very excited about a Giveaway I’m doing with Radical Skincare, to celebrate their entrance into Sephora. (They’re currently sold at Barney’s and other high end stores.) They offered to give one of my readers a full size of their Instant Revitalizing Mask, which sells for $65.00 in stores. All subscribers to the site are automatically entered into the Giveaway, which ends in early November. I haven’t checked the list recently, so if you’re not a subscriber – and want to receive my updates and be entered into this (and future) Giveaways, please subscribe. Enjoy the watch! Thank you so much for your comment and for reading EverBeautiful.com. Since I’m obsessive about increasing EB traffic, I’ll ask that, if you like, you share it with friends. Thanks! xo, Mel
