Bonding Over Beauty: The Beauty Recipes

Bonding Over Beauty: The Beauty Recipes by Erika Katz is a delicious and interactive ebook. It was inspired by the author’s first book, Bonding Over Beauty: A Mother Daughter Guide to Foster Self Esteem, Confidence and Trust in which Katz explored beauty as a way to bond with her daughter while teaching her to take care of her changing body. Bonding Over Beauty: The Beauty Recipes provides the figurative ingredients for mothers of tweens and teen daughters to use during the very girly rite of passage known, in my family at least, as a “beauty day.” With simple recipes for face masks, body scrubs, toners, bath products and more, Bonding Over Beauty will delight you and your teen and will provide the wonderful opportunity to strengthen your relationship. It makes me nostalgic for the times I spent learning beauty secrets, sharing laughs and bonding with my own mom over a table full of hair products and cosmetics.

My mother was and still is a great beauty and she created the tradition of beauty days when I was growing up. There were many times when we’d dedicate hours to experimenting with face masks, hair conditioners, nail polish and cosmetics. It was from my mom that I learned how to expertly apply makeup but that was hardly the point of our beauty days. Sure, it was great fun to play with different looks and beauty products, but the real point was to share time, laughter and secrets. I’d confide my deepest secrets and insecurities and, my mom, being the special person she is, would be supportive and funny. Of course she’d tell me how beautiful I was. She does to this day. And, there were times when I even believed her as she taught me how to calm my overactive teenage skin or make my hair as shiny as possible. Our beauty days were not only fun and a chance to bond, they were imbued with hope and the possibility of bright and beautiful days to come.

I continued the tradition of beauty days with my own daughters who still fondly remember the love, laughter and green face masks. Truth be told, even though my daughters are now grown, I can still convince them to join me in a face mask when they come to visit.

Bonding Over Beauty includes dozens of recipes for beauty products that you and your daughter can make from everyday household and food items. The book includes a shopping list, gift tags and usage instructions you can print and cut out to give your home-made beauty product to a friend and – how’s this for great? – links to how-to videos produced by and starring Erika Katz. They are a wonderful accompaniment to Bonding Over Beauty.

While the book is aimed at tween and teenage girls, I think it would be great for mothers and daughters of any age. It is my firm belief – and the raison d’etre of EverBeautiful.com – that an interest in beauty does not render us superficial beings. Instead I think it reflects a healthy psyche and a positive sense of who we are.
