Karl Lagerfeld and Ines de la Fressange

The Grand Palais was the backdrop for Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Show – and grand hardly begins to describe it. The genius that is Karl Lagerfeld was evident everywhere. A full orchestra played, among other selections, The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony as close to 90 models glided before the mostly Chanel-clad guests. Lagerfeld stayed close to Mme Chanel’s vision but, as always, imbued it with more than a few twists of his own. Black and white tweed suits, some reinterpreted as shorts suits with boxy jackets; a sprinkling of soft pastel florals, tulle to die for and – my favorite – distressed denim jeans, but unlike any jeans you’ve ever seen, were on view in the more than 80 looks sent down the runway. The legendary Ines de la Fressange, Lagerfeld’s first muse with whom he had a highly publicized falling out, returned to the fold and walked hand in hand with the Kaiser in a satisfying ending to an amazing show.

Enough talk … here’s Karl. For Chanel.
